The New Orleans Pelicans have signed point guard Gal Mekel, adding depth to their below average bench. Mekel joins Dante Cunningham, who signed yesterday, in replacing recently waived Darius Miller and Patric Young.

Mekel, 26 years old, is a 6'3, 191 pounder from Israel. He played collegiately at Wichita State, before beginning a successful 5 year career in Israel where he won two Israeli Super League championships, and earned two Israeli Super League MVP awards.

Mekel made the Dallas Mavericks 2013-2014 roster, appearing in 31 games. After making the opening day roster this year, Dallas elected to bring back point guard J.J. Barea, which led to them parting ways with Mekel.

Mekel will likely serve as a facilitator for the second unit. Outside of Jrue Holiday, the other point guards on New Orleans roster are more "score first" than "pass first".

He will wear #24 and is available to play tomorrow night as the Pelicans battle the Los Angeles Clippers.
