In the wake of the child-abuse scandal that has rocked Penn State University and the sports world, Head Football Coach Joe Paterno has announced his retirement, effective at the end of the season.

Calling the scandal and its aftermath one of the "great sorrows" of his life, Paterno said in hindsight "I should have done more" than simply report the allegations to his superiors.

The 84-year old Paterno is the winningest coach in the history of college football and his tenure in State College was considered to be one of the highest integrity.  But Paterno has come under intense scrutiny after police said he had a "moral reponsibility" to do more than he did when he heard of the allegations.
