The Oakland Athletics, mired in an eight game losing streak, have fired manager Bob Geren.

Former Arizona Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin has been named interim skipper.

Despite having four pitchers on the disabled list, the A's lead the American League in ERA.  The A's have struggled to score runs.  They are last in the league in runs per game and home runs and next to last in team batting average.

Geren was in his fifth season as manager.  He replaced Ken Macha after the 2006 season.

According to an espn.com article, it is the first time in a quarter century that the Athletics have changed managers in the middle of a season.
