Notre Dame will be joining the Atlantic Coast Conference as a full member, but will remain an independent in football.

The Irish will join the ACC as soon as it can exit the Big East, which requires members to provide 27 months notice to exit. It may be possible for Notre Dame to leave earlier though, Syracuse, West Virginia, and Pittsburgh were able to leave early by paying a higher exit fee.

Despite not playing football in the ACC, the Irish, as a partner of the conference, will play five games annually against league programs, and will play each ACC program in football once every three years.

Notre Dame has traditionally played the likes of Michigan, Michigan St., USC, Boston College, Stanford, and Navy in football.
