After spending the first five years of his career with the New Orleans Saints, wide receiver Robert Meachem earned a big payday in free agency from the San Diego Chargers, signing a four-year $25.5 million contract, with over $14 million guaranteed.

However, in only one season on the West Coast, Meachem struggled to stay healthy, and struggled to make any kind of impact. As a result, the Chargers cut him over the weekend, paying him $5 million to go away, and eating another $10.625 million in cap money the next two seasons.

New Orleans played home to Meachem's best years as a pro, and his former team is hoping he can return to form. According to espn reports, Meachem is in the process of re-signing with the Saints.

There is no word yet on who the Saints will release to make room for Meachem. Stay tuned to espn1420.com for more updates as they come.

UPDATE: Meachem has filled the roster spot of linebacker Jonathan Vilma. Vilma was placed on the short-term injured reserve list today. Click here for more details.
