The first round of the 2016 NFL Draft will be held on Thursday, April 28, in Chicago, Illinois.

Between now and then, we’ll be looking back at all of the drafts of the New Orleans, from 1967-2015.

Yesterday, we looked back at 1971.

Today: 1972

The 1972 draft was the sixth draft in the history of the Saints.

The pick: Royce Smith, a guard, out of Georgia.

Smith became the sixth-ever first round draft choice of the Saints, taken with the 8th overall pick in 1972.

A native of Savannah, Georgia, Smith was a disappointment, starting in only his rookie season.

A 6-foot-3, 250-pound guard, Smith started 10 games as a rookie in 1972, before becoming a reserve in 1973, his final year with the Saints, prior to moving on to the Atlanta Falcons, where he spent the final three years of his career.

The Saints did make two really good selections later on in the 1972 NFL Draft, selecting safety Tommy Myers in the third round, before taking linebacker Joe Federspiel in the fourth round.

Myers, a Syracuse product, started 10 season at free safety for the Saints, while Federspiel, who played his college football at Kentucky, spent nine seasons with the teams, including eight as a starter.
