The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team had a chance to take the lead in the Western division of the Sun Belt Conference but the UTA Mavericks proved to be too much for the Cajuns. They ended up winning both games of the doubleheader and sweep the Cajuns. The last time the Cajuns had been swept in a Sun Belt Conference series was back in 2013.

The Cajuns had been consistent in the 2nd half of the season, but errors would hurt the defense and there wasn't the timely hitting that the Cajun faithful had been accustomed to. Gunner Leger, who had been scratched from his Friday start would start game 1 of the doubleheader. He pitched well but the defense gave up 5 errors in game one of the double header giving the Mavericks all of the momentum.

The 1st game of the double header saw the Mavericks jump out to an early 4-0 lead and the Cajuns fought back to cut the lead to 4-2 on an Alex Pinero 2-run home run. The 2 runs from Pinero would be the only runs that the Cajuns would get and the Mavericks would run away with it in the later innings by adding 4 more runs and win 10-2.

It was a different game, but a similar story in game 2 of the double header. The Mavericks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning.  In the bottom of the 5th inning, a costly error and a couple of wild pitches would give the Mavericks a 6-0 lead. The Cajuns would fight back in the top of the 6th with a 3-RBI triple from Alex Pinero to cut into the Mavericks lead and Pinero would try to be the Cajuns hero but the Cajuns' errors would prove to be too costly. The Mavericks would end up winning game 2 of the doubleheader 9-3.

If the Cajuns want to have a shot at getting into the NCAA tournament as a 2 or 3 seed, the next 8 games will be crucial being as they are all at home and if they can win both series and win the midweek games they will be in a good position to get into the postseason but if they don't they will need to win the conference tournament to get in.  Coach Robe said after the game, "You can't pick and choose when you play bad...You can pick and choose how you respond."

The Cajuns next game will be this Friday at 6 p.m. as the Georgia Southern Eagles come to M.L. Tigue Moore Field at Russo Park for a 3 game SBC series. After the series against the Eagles, the Cajuns will host Louisiana Tech and Mcneese State in midweek contests.
