LSU opened the 2017 season with a 27-0 shutout of the BYU Cougars, dominating for for four quarters.

In a game originally scheduled for Houston, but moved to New Orleans due to Hurricane Harvey, the majority of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome was filled with purple and gold, and the Tigers gave the fans plenty to cheer about.

Running back Derrius Guice led LSU with 122 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns on 27 carries.

"We played LSU football tonight," said head coach Ed Orgeron. "(We) ran the ball well. All credit to our players and coaching staff."

New offensive coordinator Matt Canada called plenty of running plays, as the Tigers gashed the Cougars for 296 yards on the ground.

Senior back Darrel Williams chipped in 92 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

Quarterback Danny Etling was effective, completing 14 of his 17 pass attempts for 171 yards. True freshmen QB Myles Brennan saw action as well, completing his only pass attempt for 12 yards.

As a team, LSU finished with 479 yards of total offense.

"I thought it was excellent the whole night," said Orgeron of the LSU offense. "I thought it was great."

As effective as LSU's offense was, it was the defense that shined most. BYU could only muster 97 total yards of offense, finishing the game with -5 rushing yards.

"A+ from our young defense tonight," noted Orgeron. "Just a tremendous job by our whole staff and football players."

LSU's D allowed 6 first downs on the night, owning the time of possession battle 41:54 to 18:06.

"All week, we were extremely focused," said Orgeron. "I'm happy for our fans."

LSU hosts Tennessee-Chattanooga next week at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge. Kickoff is set for 6:30pm.
