The USA Today Coaches Poll found the LSU Tigers ranked thirteenth, while the Ohio State Buckeyes came out on top.

Les Miles and crew have some rungs on the ladder to climb if they want to make it into the College Football Playoff, but any team that manages to put together an SEC run deserves a spot. With Leonard Fournette in the backfield as a dark horse Heisman candidate, the Tigers could be poised to make a run if they figure the quarterback position out.

Urban Meyer's Buckeyes are going to be stacked again this year. Even with star defensive lineman Joey Bosa and a few players missing the game against Virginia Tech, Ohio State is ready to defend their top spot again this year. Preseason number ones rarely protect their status all year, but this could be one of those odd occasions.

A few things jump off the page when you look at the rankings.

NCAA coaches respect the hell out of the TCU Horned Frogs, who are making more noise in the state of Texas than the Longhorns or any other in-state competitor thought they were ever capable of. Add Baylor in at #4 and you start to see why the unranked Longhorns and Aggies of A&M are the ones behind the eight ball.

Louisiana Tech was the only other state school to receive a vote to be ranked (five votes), and the entire ranked list is pretty much just filled with teams from the Power Fives.

Eight teams from the SEC, six from the Pac-12, three a piece from the Big-10 and Big-12, and three ACC. That only leaves two spots left for Boise State and Notre Dame.

The list is filled with the usual suspects, in the exact spots you would expect them.
