Louisiana catcher Lexie Elkins became the first Ragin' Cajun selected number one overall in the NPF (National Pro Fastpitch) College Senior draft.

Pennsylvania Rebellion used their first pick on Elkins Thursday night, making her the 3rd Cajun in history to be drafted in the NPF.

Christi Orgeron was a 5th round pick in 2012, while Brianna Cherry went in the 3rd round in 2013.

The NPF season begins in June, but Elkins cannot sign a contract until the season is complete, per NCAA rules.

“Incredible, awesome and surreal were the emotions upon hearing Lexie’s name as the No. 1 pick, and to realize that what ‘we have already known’ – that Lexie is the best of the best – is now known by all,” Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball head coach Mike Lotief said in a University press release. “This is an amazing moment in our program’s and University’s history to have the best in their area recognized nationally."

Elkins is a two-time All-American and Sun Belt Conference player of the year, as well as the 2015 NFCA/Diamond Sports Division I Catcher of the Year. Now she can add No.1 overall pick to her impressive resume.

“We are very proud, appreciate and acknowledge that our community (“Us”) is the reason she is No. 1, because of their love and support and nurturing," added Lotief.
