Ragin' Cajun Softball Catcher Lexie Elkins was selected as the female winner of the James T. Corbett Award, which means she's the best in Louisiana.

Elkins will be honored along with 23 other individuals and two teams at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Banquet on August 8th at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Her teammate, Christina Hamilton, took the award home last year. The Corbett Award is given to the best male and female amateur athletes in the state of Louisiana, so this isn't exactly a minor accolade for the Cajun catcher.

It was kind of a no-brainer. Elkins crushed 32 home runs last year (best in the nation) and surpassed the 80 RBI mark (83) for only the second time in program history. The All-State Sugar Bowl had an easy decision picking Elkins.

"It means a lot," Elkins said. "But I couldn't have done it without my support team behind me. Coach Mike (Lotief), my teammates and everybody behind the scenes."

Head Ragin' Cajun Softball Coach Michael Lotief is always one to give his players as much credit as possible.

"She is so much more than the number next to home runs," Lotief remarked. "We all know what a great hitter and fierce competitor she is. We are also seeing that she is a leader, great teammate and a hard worker who understands the process and commitment it takes to be the best."

Cajun Nation continues to rack up awards, whether it be bowl trophies, Sun Belt titles or individual accomplishments. Elkins is the latest to make Lafayette proud.
