Gene Stephenson built the Wichita State baseball program into a national power.  And, in 36 years, only one coach in college baseball history has won more games.

But Stephenson is out of a job.

Wichita State fired the legendary coach yesterday, after the Shockers made the NCAA regionals for the first time in five years in 2013.  Athletic Director Eric Sexton made the announcement of Stephenson's firing, with one year remaining on his contract.

Under Stephenson's tenure, Wichita State made 28 NCAA regional appearances, seven College World Series appearances, and the 1989 National Championship.  The Shockers were in Super Regionals in 2007 and 2008.

His record at Wichita State was 1837-675-3.
