The Lafayette High Mighty Lions are coming off a 2-8 season which saw injury after injury pile up, but they just kept fighting and playing hard. 2014 gives them a fresh start with an opportunity to put that bitter taste of last season behind them.

Lafayette High Head Coach Jay Domengeaux joined Brandon Comeaux on ESPN 1420′s “Off the Bench” to talk about the unusual season that was 2013 – a season which saw 16 injuries.

“We had some things go on last year that I don’t think any amount of weight room time would’ve helped us out. I’ve never been a part of a team as a player or a coach that had that many severe injuries. It wasn’t just a sprained ankle or a broken finger; it was some things quite a bit more serious.”

Coach Domengeaux also addressed his senior class’ desire to make it back to the playoffs (they made it as sophomores) and not end their high school playing careers with another losing season.

“The attitude has been they don’t want to repeat it. (The losing season) has helped them become more of a unit for sure.”

Coach Domengeaux also talked about how Ragin’ Cajun commit and #1 National Kicker Stevie Artigue is a leader on his team. He spoke about his split back veer offense and the talent he has coming back to run that offense. On defense, he says they will play more of a 4-3 scheme this year to take advantage of their many linebackers that are coming back for another year.
