Lafayette High Mighty Lion baseball is receiving a much needed face lift on Monday. In a sport filled with metaphors, surgery may be a fitting one for the Lafayette High baseball field.

"The infield hasn't been done in 20 years and the outfield has never been redone," said Mighty Lions head baseball coach Sam Taulli under the hot August sun. "Each year we try to patch it and fix the low spots...the band marches on it during football season because they have no other place to go. It compacts it and gives us drainage problems."

Drainage problems are one of many. If rain falls on Monday, the team can't play a Tuesday game because six inches of water sit in the outfield.

After walking across the diamond this morning, the edge of the infield has a large lip around it (a short decline). The outfield has a giant dirt divot that looks like a sand trap.

"The school board told us they couldn't give us any help, so we're having to do it all ourselves," explained Taulli.

Taulli killed the grass on the field today (pictured) after the entire baseball team cleaned up the field all morning. The field will be torn up on Monday and the process of re-leveling everything and growing a new playing surface begins.

Similar to their transportation costs, Lafayette High must raise money to pay for the field. Luckily for the community, there's a fun way to get involved and make a difference.

The Mighty Lions Dugout Club (non-profit, volunteer organization) will host their 2nd annual Mighty Lions Dugout Dinner and Auction at the River Oaks Events Center on Saturday, October 3rd and 4:30pm. Dinner, silent and live auctions, a cash bar, and one hilarious man on the mic.

"We have Murray Conque as the emcee. He's a well-known local comedian and auctioneer and does his act. Everybody has a great time. We had a blast last year and hope to have a bigger turnout this year."

Advance tickets are being sold now for $25. For more information on how and where to purchase tickets, call LaChelle Castille at 337-280-8284, or via e-mail at castilledl@cox.net.

Another way the community can help right now is donations for the auction. Whether it be signed sports memorabilia, gift cards, merchandise, or anything that would be potentially bid on, it will help the event raise as much money as possible, in turn, helping the team pay for part of, or hopefully all of, their soon to be new baseball field.

For advertising purposes, the Mighty Lions Dugout Club is asking for donations by September 1rst in order to promote all that comes with the great Mighty Lions Dugout Dinner and Auction event.

To donate or purchase an event ticket, contact LaChelle Castille at 337-280-8284, or via e-mail at castilledl@cox.net, or contact Dawn LaBorde at 337-288-4543.
