Lafayette Runner Finishes Among Top Racers In Crescent City Classic, Nearly Breaks American Masters Record

It was an event he had run three times before, and while it was a great one for 41-year-old Kevin Castille, it just missed being a historic one, too.

The Lafayette native finished in 12^th place Saturday at the 35^th annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic 10K, besting all fellow Louisianians and Americans in the race. But Castille’s finish time, 29 minutes and 39 seconds, fell two seconds short of breaking the American masters record. It’s a record he had in mind during the race:

It would have been easier (to reach the masters record) if I would have had a little help, but the first group was out so fast. I had to kind of be smart. I ended up running the entire race by myself. I caught about five or six of those guys, but it didn’t help me during the harder parts of the race.

Despite finishing just short of a record, Castille described Saturday as “awesome.” After all, he does have local bragging rights:

It’s home, so you always have to keep your title. It's a local honor. I'm definitely running my best.
