Jimmy Graham Not Keen On Franchise Tag, Does Not Want 1 Year Deal

New Orleans Saints All-Pro tight end Jimmy Graham is currently enjoying the Hawaii sun at the NFL Pro Bowl. As he prepared for Sunday night’s all-star contest, Graham answered questions from a number of reporters, and according to NFL.com, shared his feelings about possibly being franchise tagged.

“I’m not keen on the franchise tag. That would be really unfortunate, but that’s really all I have to say about that,” Graham said yesterday.

Graham is current being paid the final month of a contract a rookie contract he signed in 2010. As he enters free agency, his stock is currently as high as it’s ever been, as he’s coming of an All-Pro season that saw him put up gaudy numbers. Graham finished 2013 with 86 catches for 1,215 yards, and an NFL best 16 touchdown receptions.

New Orleans general manager Mickey Loomis commented earlier in the week that the Saints would use the franchise tag on Graham if they couldn’t agree to an extension before free agency beings. If Graham is franchised, the Saints would pay him the average salary of the 5 highest paid tight ends in football, which would likely come out to around $6.5 million. However, it would only be a one year deal.

“That’s real unfortunate,” explained Graham. “If that happens, it doesn’t really matter what I prefer.”
