It's not the first time it's been done; in fact, it's not the first time it's been done this season.

But the Patriots did it Sunday, and it cost them.

New England won the toss and chose to kick off in overtime and the decision backfired as the New York Jets drove the length of the field for a touchdown, beating the Pats, 26-20.

Ryan Fitzpatrick's six yard touchdown pass to Eric Decker in the first possession moved the Jets' record to 10-5 and sole possession of the second AFC Wild Card spot with one week to go.

New England won the toss and Patriots' captain Matthew Slater said "We want to kick that way," pointing to a goal.  However, the Patriots said they wanted to kick and that took away the option of which way they wanted to kick.  Had they chosen the end of the field after winning the toss, they would have still wound up kicking off.

After the game, Patriots coach Bill Belechick confirmed he ordered the Patriots to kick.

Earlier this season, Minnesota kicked off after winning the toss because of wind conditions and went on to beat the St. Louis Rams, 21-18.
