CORTLAND, N.Y. (AP) — Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith both had solid performances on the first day of training camp as they compete to be the New York Jets' starting quarterback.

Sanchez led the first-team offense Friday, and it is expected the two will alternate throughout camp — as they did during off-season practices. Sanchez is trying to keep his job as he enters his fifth season, while Smith is hoping to start as a rookie after being drafted in the second round.

Sanchez says he's "optimistic" and isn't thinking about not winning the job. Meanwhile, he was also seen talking to Smith several times on the field and helping him pick up Marty Mornhinweg's offense.

Sanchez added that Smith is "a great competitor" and they "get the best out of each other."
