How well have the New Orleans Saints fared selecting cornerbacks in the first round of the NFL Draft?

The 2017 NFL Draft gets underway on Thursday, April 27, and there’s a lot of speculation that the Saints will select a cornerback with one of their two (11th & 32nd) first round picks.

Since 1967, the Saints have only selected two cornerbacks in the opening round, with  average, at best, success.

In 2009, the Saints selected Ohio St. cornerback Malcolm Jenkins in the first round, who did play some cornerback for the team, but he was/is predominantly a safety, so we're not figuring him here.

The first corner that the Saints took in the first round was Alex Molden, out of Oregon, in 1996.

In 5 years in New Orleans, including 3 as a starter, Molden accumulated 165 tackles and 8 interceptions.

Molden wasn't a bad player, but he'll always be remembered by a number of Saints fans as the guy that the team passed on Eddie George for.

The last corner back that the Saints chose in the opening round was Patrick Robinson, out of Florida St., in 2010.

Robinson had a couple of solid seasons in New Orleans, but he was a little bit of a disappointment, playing 5 years for the franchise, including only one as a starter, compiling 150 tackles and 9 interceptions.

The Saints don't have a deep history taking cornerbacks in the first round, but their due to hit on taking one.
