How have offensive tackles, drafted in the first round, fared for the New Orleans Saints in their rookie seasons?

The question is being posed, due to the fact that the Saints chose former Wisconsin offensive tackle Ryan Ramczyk with the 32nd-overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Ramczyk became the eighth offensive tackle selected by the franchise in the opening round.

If history has anything to say about things, don't expect Ramczyk, to produce much in his rookie campaign.

In 1975, the Saints selected an offensive tackle in the first round for the very first time, when they took Kurt Schumacher of Ohio St. with the 12th-overall pick.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Schumacher only started 4 games over 4 years with the Saints, while not starting a game in his rookie season.

In 1980, the Saints selected Stan Brock of Colorado with the 12th-overall selection.

A native of Portland, Oregon, Brock had a long, solid 11-year career with the Saints, including his rookie season, when he started 12 games.

It should be pointed out, however, that Brock played right tackle, which is considered an easier position to play than left tackle.

In 1986, the Saints drafted former Virginia star Jim Dombrowski with the 6th-overall pick.

A native of Williamsville, New York, Dombrowski only started 3 games as a rookie, and although had a really good career, spent the majority of it at guard, playing only 33 of his 151 games at the position.

In 1993, the Saints made one of their best picks, ever, taking Willie Roaf of Louisiana Tech with the 8th-overall pick.

A Hall of Famer, Roaf had a fabulous career, but even he played right tackle in his rookie year, before making the switch to left tackle in 1994.

In 1997, former San Diego St. standout Kyle Turley was selected 7th-overall by the Saints.

Turley did start 15 games as a rookie, but all at guard, before moving to right tackle the following year.

In 2005, the Saints chose Jammal Brown, out of Oklahoma, with the 13th-overall selection.

Brown was a starter in his rookie year, but again, all were at right tackle, before shifting to left tackle for the 2006 season.

The only other offensive tackle that the Saints took in the first round, prior to Ramczyk, was Andrus Peat, with the 13th-overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft.

A native of Mesa, Arizona, Peat has spent most of his early career at guard.

So, if you're thinking that Ramczyk may be an adequate substitute for Terron Armstead, if the latter gets injured, think again.

No one rookie has ever starter for multiple games at left tackle for the Saints.

Even right tackle is a bit of s stretch.

Ramczyk may have a bright future, but judging from history, he may be at least one year away.
