Hornets Beat Celtics On Anthony Davis’ Late Tip-In

New Orleans Arena was rocking Wednesday night as the New Orleans Hornets (23-46) hosted the Boston Celtics. A well played contest from start to finish, the game came down to the final moments. Unlike games of the recent past, the Hornets pulled out the victory in dramatic fashion, thanks in large part to Anthony Davis.

Despite battling a stomach virus that had him puking all morning, Hornets rookie Anthony Davis played through his illness, tipping in the game winning bucket with 0.3 seconds left. The bucket gave the Hornets a much deserved 97-96 victory over the Celtics.

“I was really tired, but I knew my team needed me, so I was trying to fight through it,” Davis said. “I’m glad I did. It was a big win for us.”

Davis missed the morning shootaround with the virus, but ultimately played 28 minutes. While his stat line of 9 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocked shots aren’t up to par with his usual averages, they were extremely impressive considering his condition.

“His first game-winner comes on night when he’s sick and puking and doesn’t feel his best,” Hornets coach Monty Williams said. “So kudos to him.”

Kudos to him indeed. And kudos to Ryan Anderson (21 points) and Brian Roberts (12 points) who led a Hornets bench that outscored Boston’s reserves 39-17.

Greivis Vasquez was solid as well, finishing with 13 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists. Eric Gordon scored 18.

“We haven’t been able to close many of them (games),” explained Vasquez. “Tonight we did…we played great defense in the second half.”

New Orleans held Boston to 12 points in the third quarter, 19 in the fourth, and limited the Celtics to 32.4% shooting from the field in the second half.

The victory not only snapped the Hornets 4 game losing streak, but gives them a season sweep of Boston.

Next up, a home matchup with the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night. Tip-off is set for 7:00.
