Top seeded Simona Halep won her first major championship Saturday, defeating Sloane Stephens, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 to win the French Open at Roland Garros.

Stephens was in control early and was up a break in the second set before Halep began her comeback.  Tied at 4-4 in the second, Halep won seven straight games to take the second set and go up 5-0 in the third.

Halep, the world's top ranked player, won her first major in her fourth attempt, having lost twice in the French final and once in Australia.

Stephens was the first American other than the Williams sisters to make the final at the French since Jennifer Capriati in 2001.
