The 2016 NFL Draft gets underway on Thursday, April 28, in Chicago, Illinois.

Between now and then, we’ll be looking back at some of the past drafts by the Saints, and some of the better players they passed up on when it was their turn to pick.

Of course, every NFL team has had their “steals” and “busts” over the years, as the NFL Draft is such an inexact science, but it’s kind of fun, and at times, agonizing, to look back and see what players they could have, and maybe even should have drafted.

Today, we go back to the 1986 NFL Draft.

It's hard to find fault with the 1986 draft for the Saints, as it's one of the best in franchise history, but no draft is perfect, and that one was no exception.

In the fourth round, with the 88th-overall pick, the Saints selected Liberty receiver Kelvin Edwards.

Now, a lot of fourth round draft choices never pan out, but Edwards was not a good pick by the Saints, as he only lasted one season with the team.

8 picks later, with the 96th-overall pick, the San Francisco 49ers took James Madison defensive end Charles Haley.

Needless to day, it was a pick that struck gold for the 49ers, as Haley turned out to be one of the more feared pass rushers in the league for more than a decade.

A 5-time Pro Bowler, Haley, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015, compiled 12 sacks in his rookie season, before going on to accumulate five more double-digit sack seasons.

In 18 seasons, including 8 with the 49ers, and five others with the Dallas Cowboys, Haley appeared in 169 games, while starting 120.

During that span, Haley accumulated 485 tackles, including 100.5 sacks.

Haley, one of the top pass rushers of all-time, would have been a great addition to the Saints' defense.
