Floyd Mayweather Knocks Out Victor Ortiz in Bizarre Fight for Welterwight Title [VIDEO]
Floyd Mayweather Jr. stayed unbeaten Saturday night, knocking out Victor Ortiz in the fourth round and take hold of Ortz’s piece of the welterweight title. But it was the strange circumstances of the match, and a confrontation afterward, that has people buzzing.
Just after the two fighters hugged in the middle of the ring, Mayweather socked his opponent with a left hand and then a right hand that left Ortiz unable to continue.
“We touched gloves and we were back to fighting and then I threw the left and right hand after the break,” Mayweather said. “In the ring you have to protect yourself at all times.”
After the match, Mayweather explained that it was Ortiz who had been fighting dirty. Ortiz had head butted Mayweather earlier in the fight, then kissed him.
When HBO’s 80-year-old announcer Larry Merchant was interviewing Mayweather in the ring after the match, the boxer accused Merchant of being unfair in his coverage of him, and Merchant responded, “If I was 50 years younger, I’d kick your [rear].”
