FIFTY!!! Cajuns Beat ULM to Set School Wins Record

ragincajuns.com

Before the season started, the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns set goals for 2014.

One of them was to win fifty games…and that was a goal many thought would be unreachable.  Now, as head coach Tony Robichaux said afterward, “we need to reset some goals.”

Louisiana broke open a tie game with four runs in the eighth inning to defeat UL Monroe 7-3 to move to 50-7 on the season.  It was the thirteenth straight win over the Warhawks over two seasons and the seventh time this year the Cajuns have taken care of their geographic rival.

Matt Plitt (2-0) worked out of an eighth inning game and retired ULM in order in the ninth to get the victory after ULM had scored the tying run in the top of the inning.

Tyler Bray, who threw seven strong innings against the Cajuns last Saturday but was saddled with the loss, threw another seven in this game and gave his team a chance to win.

But Bray was gone in the eighth and the Cajuns broke the game open against reliever Alex Dumaine (3-6) as Tyler Girouard led off with an infield hit.  Dumaine then walked Jace Conrad and Caleb Adams to load the bases.  Chase Compton delivered his 40th RBI of the season on a sacrifice fly for what proved to be the winning run.  Michael Strentz then singled up the middle for another run and Adams scored on a wild pitch.  Strentz was brought home by a squeeze bunt by Kyle Clement to end the scoring.

ULM (22-35) took an early 2-0 lead against Cajuns’ starter Austin Robichaux on a two run single by Ross Moore.  But that was all the Warhawks could muster against the Cajuns’ right hander, who allowed just five hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings.  ULM threatened in the sixth after a leadoff triple by Kodie Tidwell.  But Robichaux got two ground balls with the drawn in infield and ended the inning with a strikeout of Chet SImoneaux.

The Cajuns got on the board in the third on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Leonards and added a run in the fifth on a Seth Harrison ground out.  THe Cajuns took their first lead of the game in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Strentz.

But ULM tied it in the eighth.  Pinch hitter Anthony Herrera reached on an error and after a foul out, Tidwell talked.  The runners moved up on a passed ball and Herrera scored the tying run on a fielder’s choice.  After a walk to Dalton Herrington, Plitt came in to strike out Simoneaux to end the inning.

The Cajuns will now face 4th seeded Texas State, a 4-3 winner over Western Kentucky.  ULM will play the Hilltoppers in an elimination game at 9 am.  The Cajuns took two out of three from the Bobcats earlier this season.  That game will be at 4pm, with the broadcast beginning at 3:30 on ESPN 1420.
