Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns basketball team will get to scoreboard-watch on Thursday while the rest of the league jockeys for position in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament beginning next Saturday in Hot Springs, AR.

The seeding possibilities are many, but after tomorrow, quite a few things should be decided. Here are the games scheduled and what they mean.

SOUTH ALABAMA (7-7) AT FLORIDA ATLANTIC (7-7)– The winner of this game still has a chance at a first round bye, depending on what North Texas does in their final two games. South won the first game between the two schools. The loser can finish no better than 8-8 and will probably be playing on Saturday. It is possible these two teams and UNT could finish 8-8. In that case, the winner of this game has an inside track to the tiebreaker.

NORTH TEXAS (8-6) AT ARKANSAS-LITTLE ROCK (11-3) –UALR won the first meeting in Denton, 69-66. They’ve already clinched a tie for the Western Division title and a win in either of their final two games will cinch the #2 seed in the tournament. The loss to Louisiana really hurt the Mean Green, who now find themselves in a position where they might have to win this game, or at Denver, in order to keep a first round bye. North Texas would win a tiebreaker over South Alabama, but loses the tiebreaker to Florida Atlantic. In case of a three-way tie at 8-8, well, it’s complicated.

ARKANSAS STATE (6-8) AT WESTERN KENTUCKY (5-9)–A four-way tie for fifth at 8-8 is a possibility, but ASU would have to win this one and then at UALR on Saturday in order to be a part of that. That’s a pretty tough road to hoe. WKU will be playing in a first round game at the tournament, regardless of what they do the rest of the way. The Hilltoppers, mathematically, could still finish as the #11 seed. But more likely, they’ll be playing in the #8 vs. #9 game.

TROY (3-11) AT FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL (4-10)–Troy is in the #11 position right now and a loss in this game would clinch that spot. But they can get out of the cellar with a win here. FIU won the first game between the two teams. FIU can really play spoiler on Saturday when they play host to South Alabama. Troy still has to go to FAU, so chances are 11th is where they’re headed.

MIDDLE TENNESSEE (13-1) AT LOUISIANA-MONROE (1-13)–This one has nothing to do with seeding, as Middle has already clinched the top spot and ULM is ineligible for the tournament. But this game has importance for two reasons: Middle Tennessee is still in line for a possible at-large berth to the NCAA tournament if they don’t win the SBC tourney. And, this is ULM’s last chance to win a home game this year. Both of their wins this season have come on the road.

Denver, like the Cajuns, is sitting out Thursday. They’ll clinch the #3 seed with a win over North Texas on Sunday. Denver can finish no lower than fourth.

As far as the Cajuns are concerned, they’ll be the #2 seed if they win over ULM, UALR loses their last two and Denver loses to North Texas. They will be #3 with a win and a Denver loss, combined with one UALR victory. And, in all other scenarios, they’ll be the #4 seed.

Singer Chris Brown is a perfect villain for the world of wrestling. Current and former WWE champs CM Punk and the Iron Sheik are using Twitter to call out the Grammy-winning R&B performer, who is most infamous for assaulting fellow singer and former girlfriend Rihanna in 2009.

Current WWE heavyweight champion CM Punk started the Twitter fight with this tweet:

twitter.com/@cmpunk

“I would like @chrisbrown fight somebody that can defend themselves. Me curb stomping that turd would be a #Wrestlemania moment”

Brown countered the move. Twice. He’s since removed his first statement questioning CM Punk’s manhood:

“@CMpunk needs more followers. Such a leader! Not to mention the roids hes on has made it utterly impossible for him pleasure a women.”

But Chris Brown left this tweet up:

twitter.com/@chrisbrown

Of course, former WWE champion the Iron Sheik could not let this pass without commentary. The Sheik has eviscerated Brown on Twitter with tweets that are mostly NSFW and very threatening. We’ve adjusted this one to illustrate Sheik’s attitude.

twitter.com/@the_ironsheik

Smartly, Chris Brown has yet to respond to the Iron Sheik. However, Brown is tweeting away with Rihanna, as the two have released remixed versions out of her song ‘Birthday Cake’ and Brown’s new single ‘Turn Up the Music.’

If the singers’ relationship stays on this WWE-like track, many people would be glad to see Rihanna dust Brown with a steel chair.

Even if you aren’t a sports fan, you’ve probably been hearing an awful lot about this Jeremy Lin fellow. The New York Knicks point guard’s completely-out-of-nowhere run began on February 3rd when the-then obscure bench warmer came off the pine to spur the Knicks to a victory over the New Jersey Nets. He was inserted in the starting line-up after that, and since then has led the Knicks — who were previously league laughingstocks — to six more wins in a row.

With this improbable success, the Jeremy Lin story has captured the imagination of all of America. There hasn’t been a sports figure with such sudden cultural relevance since, well, Tim Tebow a couple months ago. Lin is so hot that reportedly Kim Kardashian wants to <del>use him for his fame</del> go out on a date with him. Learn more about the man behind this rampant “lin-sanity.”

He Graduated from Harvard

Part of what makes Lin unique is that he is a Harvard graduate, the first to play in the NBA from that elite institution since 1954. In fact, Lin is the first NBA player from the entire Ivy League since 2003. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t other players in the league who recieved top-flight educations. There are currently 14 players who went to Duke on NBA rosters, and Lin’s New York Knicks backcourt mate Landry Field graduated from Stanford.

Robert Spencer Getty Images

He Is One of The First Asian-Americans to Play in the NBA

Jeremy Lin is not the first American-born Asian player in the NBA. That would be 5-foot-7 inch Japanese-American guard Wataru Misaka, who played briefly in 1947. Since then two players with Asian mothers, Raymond Townsend and Rex Walters, have made the Association. But Lin is the first American-born player of Chinese or Taiwanese descent to play in the league, and is probably already basketball’s most famous Asian-American.

Chris Chambers, Getty Images

He Can Do “The Dougie”

Lin has joined an exclusive club, which includes CNN personality Wolf Blitzer and fellow ‘Sports Illustrated‘ cover model Kate Upton, by having his “Dougie” skills featured in a viral video. While he’s clearly better than Blitzer at the popular dance, how he measures up to Upton probably has a lot to do with whether the viewer is male or female.

He is a Devout Christian

One of the reasons Lin gets linked with Tebow is that, like the Denver Broncos’ Quarterback, Lin is a devout Christian who is open about his faith. After leading the Knicks to their fifth straight win, Lin told reporters “I’m thinking about how I can trust God more. How can I surrender more? How can I bring Him more glory?” Whether or not he’ll kneel in prayer during games and create an internet meme is another story.

Jim Rogash, Getty Images

The Knicks Almost Cut Him

There have been reports that the Knicks were on the verge of cutting Lin last month. Journeyman guard Mike James recently confirmed that the Knicks contacted him in January about taking Lin’s roster spot, but then decided to keep Lin at the last minute. So “Linsanity” was this close to never happening.

He Was the Editor of His School Paper

Lin was a great basketball player in high school, leading Palo Alto High to the 2006 California state championship. He was also the editor of the school’s paper, The Paly Voice. Lin combined these two achievements in a column he wrote about winning the championship, which The Paly Voice just reprinted.

His Name Is Now The World’s Most Famous Pun

For whatever reason, folks can’t get enough of making Lin’s last name into blended words like “lin-credible.” In fact, there is now a website called Linwords which generates an almost endless list of these lin-guistic masterpieces. From now on, any time a baby holds a basketball he will be known as a lin-fant.

Chris Trotman, Getty Images

He’s A Funny Guy

Lin mocked his Harvard pedigree, as well as stereotypes about hard-working Asian high school students, in a comedy short called “How I got Into Harvard.” Lin shot the video in 2011 as a rookie with the Golden State Warriors, and it’s recently become a YouTube favorite. As you can see, Lin is almost as natural in front of the camera as he is running the pick and roll.

He Lived On His Brother’s Couch

When Lin started his improbable run a couple weeks ago his home was a couch in the living room of his older brother’s New York City apartment. Although Lin had signed a $800,000 contract with the Knicks, the money wasn’t guaranteed, so he must have not felt comfortable about committing to his own place in a city with such high rents. Now that he’s feeling a little more sure of himself, Lin just leased a $3,800 a month apartment from former Knick David Lee, which is located next to the team’s practice facility in White Plains, New York.

He might be the real deal

In his first four shots off the bench, Lin had at least 20 points, at least six assists and shot over 50 percent. According to statistician extraordinaire Nate Silver, that has only happened 41 times since 1986, and the players who have accomplished this feat have typically been all-star, if not hall-of-fame level, perfomers. In other words, Jeremy Lin’s no fluke and “lin-sanity” just might be here to stay.

The NBA All-Star Game is Sunday in Orlando. Miami, Chicago and Oklahoma City seem poised to head into the All-Star break as the best teams in the league. Here’s what else is happening in the NBA:

Team on the Rise: San Antonio Spurs

After beating Utah, 106-102, on Monday night, San Antonio (23-9) has won 11 games in a row and leads the Southwest Division. Guard Tony Parker has been a force for the Spurs. He scored 34 points and dished out 14 assists against Toronto on Wednesday and added 30 more points and 10 more assists against the Clippers on Saturday. With Manu Ginobili and Tiago Splitter each out two weeks with injuries, San Antonio will need to get Parker help to continue to rise in the Western Conference.

Team on the Decline: Toronto Raptors

After suffering a Valentine’s Day defeat to the Knicks as a result of a last-second shot by Jeremy Lin, Toronto (9-23) lost to the Spurs and the lowly Bobcats during the week, stretching the Raptors’ losing skid to four games and eight of their last 10. Coach Dwane Casey needs to find a way for his team to improve its defense without putting the other team on the free throw line. Toronto has had eight players foul out this season, the highest total of any team.

Play of the Week: Ricky Rubio, Minnesota Timberwolves

Minnesota point guard Ricky Rubio is known for his no-look passes. This assist to Kevin Love against Houston last week is a fine example of Rubio at his best.

Player on the Rise: Nikola Pekovic, Minnesota Timberwolves

Center Nikola Pekovic has scored 18.6 points and grabbed 10.8 rebounds per game over his last six contests. Though he sprained his right ankle in the Timberwolves’ 103-101 overtime loss to Denver on Monday, Pekovic should return soon. When healthy, Pekovic is teaming with Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio to give Minnesota (16-17) a solid core of players to build into a playoff team.

Player on the Decline: Devin Harris, Utah Jazz

Utah (15-16) has lost seven of its last 10 games. In many of those losses, Devin Harris helped allow opposing point guards — like Houston’s Kyle Lowry, New York’s Jeremy Lin, San Antonio’s Tony Parker and more — to score 25 or more points and roll up big assist totals. Worse, Harris’ per game scoring average is down to 9.0 points this season. That’s four points off his career average and six points or more off his totals from the last three seasons.

Coach on the Hot Seat: Doug Collins, Philadelphia 76ers

Philadelphia (20-12) has lost three in-a-row and five of seven. While the 76ers have managed to stay competitive despite many front court injuries, their guard play has been awful at times. Coach Doug Collins’ team was the surprise of the league at one point, but now teams are adjusting. Collins must get Philadelphia back to winning with defense and taking better shots on offense.

Bizarre Stat of the Week: Ersan Ilyasova, Milwaukee Bucks

Milwaukee Bucks forward Ersan Ilyasova had 29 points and 25 rebounds in a 92-85 win over the New Jersey Nets on Sunday night. Both totals established new career highs for Ilyasova, who was drafted by the Bucks in 2005.

It was not a good week for ranked teams from western states as No. 11 UNLV, No. 13 San Diego State and No. 21 St. Mary’s all suffered multiple defeats. Meanwhile, No. 1 Kentucky and No. 2 Syracuse continued to dominate their conferences. Here’s what’s happening in college basketball:

Team on the Rise: Temple Owls

Temple (21-5, 10-2 A-10) won its 10th straight game by beating Duquesne 78-58 on Saturday. The Owls lead the Atlantic 10 Conference and seem guaranteed to be ranked in this week’s new Associated Press Top 25. Coach Fran Dunphy’s team is led by Ramone Moore and Khalif Wyatt, who can both score and defend. Temple faces league and Philadelphia rivals LaSalle on Wednesday and St. Joseph’s on Saturday.

Team on the Decline: No. 13 San Diego State Aztecs

San Diego State (20-6, 6-4 Mountain West) was beaten 58-56 by Air Force on Saturday. The loss was the Aztecs’ third in-a-row, as the team dropped a 77-67 contest at home to New Mexico on Wednesday in addition to a 65-63 loss to UNLV last week. Aztecs’ coach Steve Fisher has just four regular season games remaining to get his team to improve its woeful shooting. The return of guard Jamaal Franklin, who missed the loss to Air Force with an ankle injury, will help solve that problem.

Player on the Rise: Drew Gordon, New Mexico Lobos

Drew Gordon scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed 20 rebounds as New Mexico (22-4, 8-2 Mountain West) routed No. 11 UNLV 65-45 on Saturday. Gordon had 17 points and 17 boards when the Lobos beat No. 13 San Diego State 77-67 on Wednesday. The two victories over ranked teams gave New Mexico seven straight wins. The streak almost assures the Mountain West Conference leaders of a ranking in the new Associated Press Top 25.

Player on the Decline: Jorden Page, No. 21 Saint Mary’s Gaels

Guard Jorden Page is not a key player in the offensive attack for No. 21 St. Mary’s (23-5, 12-2 WCC). However, Page must score more than the three points he had in the team’s 65-51 loss to No. 16 Murray State on Saturday and the five points he had in a 75-60 loss to Loyola Marymount on Wednesday. Page scored double-figures just once in his past seven games. With the recent losses, the Gaels are almost certain to fall out of the Top 25 this week.

Coach on the Hot Seat: Dave Rice, UNLV

Coach Dave Rice has plenty of talent at No. 11 UNLV (22-6, 6-4 Mountain West), but the Runnin’ Rebels were beaten by two unranked teams in consecutive games this week. The 101-97 overtime loss to TCU on Tuesday coupled with a 65-45 defeat to New Mexico on Saturday means the Rebels may be on the way out of the Top 25. UNLV went 4-for-17 from the field in the second half on Saturday and showed little fight to get back in the game. Rice has four regular season games left to get UNLV back to playing like a Top 10 team.

Bizarre Stat of the Week: No. 8 University of North Carolina

North Carolina (23-4, 10-2 ACC) has never lost a game to Clemson in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels went to 56-0 against the Tigers with a 74-52 victory on Saturday.

It’s funny to think that while we are mid swing in our Mardi Gras celebration, most of the country is plugging away at another regular old work week. Growing up in South Louisiana it is sometimes hard to imagine life with out Mardi Gras, but for most of the country this is the sad reality.

Surfing the web today, I’ve come across a few places where outsiders have asked people from Louisiana to describe Mardi Gras for them. The variety of different answers is pretty funny and reminds us that Mardi Gras is definitely a different experience for everyone. Sure, it may have had religious beginnings, but Mardi Gras evolved far beyond its original religious definition to something that celebrated by all people regardless of their religious backgrounds.

So with this in mind, I’m curious as to what Acadiana thinks. How would you describe Mardi Gras to someone who has never heard of it? If you had to put Mardi Gras in a sentence what would it be?

Here’s mine:

“Mardi Gras in Lafayette is a celebration of Cajun culture in which social norms and societal hierarchy give way to music, community, and of course, beads.”

So what’s your definition? Describe Mardi Gras in one sentence in the comment section, and make sure to “Like” this article so your friends can join in too.

The New Orleans Hornets forced overtime on the road in Indiana Mardi Gras night, but they couldn’t mambo to a victory. The Pacers outscored the fleur-de-bees 17-8 in the extra period, propelling them to a 117-108 win.

Trevor Ariza hit a shot near the end of regulation to force overtime. The Hornet small forward finished with a team-high 21 points to go along with his 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Jarrett Jack had a double-double off the pine, scoring 19 while dishing out 10 assists.

Former Hornet All-Star David West (pictured left) played New Orleans for the first time since leaving for Indiana in free agency. The Pacers power forward finished with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Coincidentally, that’s what he averaged during his 9 seasons with the Hornets.

New Orleans will wrap up a 9 day road trip tonight in Cleveland. It will mark their 5th game of the trip, and 3rd game in as many nights. The Hornets will then get a week off during the NBA All-Star break.

After Hurricane Katrina devastated the Atlantic Coast in 2005, New Orleans, and the region as a whole, gained more prominence in the national and international news, and rightly so.

Although the folks living there have been through a great deal recently, their spirit still shines through. Nowhere is that more evident than in the riotous party known as Mardi Gras.

The origins of Mardi Gras stretch way back into time, thousands of year before the advent of Christianity. It was a wild festival in honor of fertility and the arrival of spring. As Christian emperors began to rule in Rome, the celebrations were integrated into the new faith. ‘Carnival’ became one last crazy party before the austerities of Lent, when people had to give up some, if not all, of the vices they so cherished.

The French were the first European settlers of New Orleans. They brought with them the tradition of carnival, and held Mardi Gras on the North American continent as early as 1699. When the Spanish took over the region later, they promptly outlawed the parties. The festivities were only reinstated after Louisiana was acquired by the United States in 1812.

Many of the costumes and ideas of Mardi Gras come from traditional Catholic carnivals celebrated all over the world, plus a few innovations unique to New Orleans. The krewes, or organizations that host balls and parades as part of the celebrations, were first created in the American South — Southern culture at its finest. The music, marching bands, beads, King Cake and colorful floats evolved over time, making Mardi Gras the grand party that it is today.

The king cake is a traditional Mardi Gras food. It is usually a ring-shaped pastry, sometimes filled with cheese or jelly and sprinkled with the colors of Mardi Gras. It began as an Epiphany treat, celebrating the arrival of the Three Wise Men to the stable where Jesus was born. Oh, and it’s delicious.

The king cake tradition was brought to New Orleans by French and Spanish settlers who associated it with the Mardi Gras carnival. A dessert synonymous with celebrations definitely belonged with Mardi Gras and has been shared during the festive season ever since.

The secret of the king cake is that there is always a small trinket, often a plastic baby representing the Baby Jesus, baked inside that one lucky eater is bound to bite into. Of course, the lucky person who gets the baby in the cake gets special privileges, but is also usually responsible for bringing the next cake.

To get into the spirit of the impending Mardi Gras celebration, and to make your mouth water a bit, here are some delicious looking king cakes we found.
