Cajuns Take Care of Lions, 6-3

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns broke open a tie game by scoring three runs in the seventh inning and rode the rally to a 6-3 win before 1,749 at M. L. “Tigue” Moore Field.

The Cajuns got six hits, five rbi and three runs scored from the bottom third of their lineup in sweeping the season series from the Lions, who had won nine straight against the Cajuns prior to this season.

Tied 2-2 in the seventh, the Cajuns got a leadoff triple from Dylan Butler off losing pitcher Sean Kennel (4-3). Butler scored on a two run homer down the left field line by Michael Strentz, his fourth of the season.  Sam Carriere then got an infield hit, stole second and scored on Dex Kjerstad’s single up the middle to cap the inning.

Southeastern (26-16) tried to rally in the eighth off Cajuns’ starter Matt Plitt (3-0) when Jameson Fisher tripled with one out and scored on a passed ball.  Sam Roberson and Harry Slade then followed with back to back singles and moved up on a double steal.  But Jesse Buratt missed on a squeeze bunt with Roberson out at the plate and then Plitt got Buratt on a comebacker to end the threat.

The Cajuns (29-13) got an insurance run in the bottom of the inning off reliever John Gremillion on a walk to Blake Trahan, a wild pitch and a single by Butler.

Southeastern opened the scoring in the first on singles by Ben Hernandez and Fisher, followed by Slade’s run scoring double down the line in left field.  But the Cajuns took the lead in the bottom of the second on a walk to Caleb Adams, Trahan’s double and Strentz’ two run double.

The Lions got an unearned run to tie the game in the fifth when Roberson drew a one out walk, and went to third on Plitt’s errant pickoff throw.  Roberson scored on Slade’s grounder.

Butler, batting seventh, had three hits, a run scored and an rbi.  Strentz, hitting eighth, had two hits a run and four rbi, while number nine hitter Sam Carriere had a hit and a run scored.

Plitt worked eight innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs.  He walked five and struck out three, throwing 122 pitches.  Ryan Wilson pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.

The Cajuns now head to Miami for a three game series with Florida International.  Gametimes are 5pm on Friday, 3pm on Saturday and 9am on Sunday.
