 The 19th ranked Cajuns softball team used a huge, seven-run sixth inning to blow open a tie game and jump out to a 9-2 lead over McNeese State on Tuesday night at Lamson Park.  The Cajuns went on to defeat the Cowgirls by a final score of 9-4.

The Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns were playing at home for the first time in nearly three weeks.  UL had been on the road for 13 straight games before returning to Lamson Park for their date with the Cowgirls.

Ashley Brignac (9-1) started and pitched 6.0 innings, striking out 12 Cowgirls while giving up two runs.  For the second straight game, Allie Chenault came on in relief, pitching the seven inning to close out the game.

UL was outhit by McNeese 8-7 in the ball game, but the Cajuns worked out of trouble and stranded 11 Cowgirls.  Seven different Cajuns had one hit a piece.

UL got on the board first when Christi Orgeron and Megan Granger led off the second inning with back-to-back home runs to left centerfield.

The Cowgirls would cut the lead in half in the fourth inning thanks to a Dani Price double and a Marissa Koetting RBI single, making the score 2-1.

McNeese tied up the game in the fifth inning with another single score.  Molly Guidry drew a one-out walk, and after advancing to second base, she scored on a Katie Roux RBI single.  The run tied the game up at 2-2 after four and a half innings.

The Cajuns would threaten in the bottom of fifth inning, putting two runners in scoring position thanks to an error, walk and two stolen bases, however they left them stranded their and the score remained tied.

 UL would take advantage of its opportunities in the sixth inning, breaking the game open by plating seven runs to take a 9-2 lead.  Orgeron led off the inning with a walk and was lifted for pinch running Brianna Cherry.

 A single just under the glove of Price at third base by Sarah Draheim, along with alert baserunning by Cherry put runners on the corners with one out.  Paige Cormier drove in Cherry to score the go-ahead run.  After the Cowgirls got the Cajuns to ground out for the second out of the inning, that is when the flood gates.

 Katie Smith delivered an RBI single to plate Draheim and give the Cajuns a 4-2 lead.  Nerissa Myers then ripped a two-RBI double down the left field line to plate Cormier and Smith.  Erikka Murphy followed with an RBI single to score Myers and give the Cajuns a 7-2 lead.

Gabriele Bridges then put her 12th home run of the season over the right field wall to score Murphy and herself, giving the Cajuns a 9-2 lead.

The Cowgirls would get two runs in the seventh inning thanks to a Katie Shumaker two-run home run to make final score 9-4.

 The Cajuns return to action this weekend when they travel to Fullerton, Calif., for the Judi Garman Classic.  The Cajuns will take on Notre Dame, Arizona, Arizona State, New Mexico and Long Beach State.
