Cajuns Complete Sweep of Bearkats, 13-3

Kyle Clement tied a school record with five hits, and Louisiana rapped out a season-high 17 hits as the Cajuns completed the opening weekend sweep of Sam Houston State 13-3 before 4,400 fans at M. L. "Tigue' Moore Field Sunday afternoon.

The Cajuns, ranked anywhere from #6-#18 in the preseason polls, scored tthree times in the first inning and put the game away with a five run fifth and a three run seventh inning, while five Cajuns' pitchers limited the Bearkats to just six hits.

Eric Carter (1-0), the second of five Cajun pitchers, picked up the win in relief of starter Nick Lee, hurling three innings, allowing three hits and one run.  He struck out three and did not walk a batter.

"Our pitchers did a great job this weekend," head coach Tony Robichaux said.  "Nick got us off to a good start and I liked he didn't let the game speed up when he got in a little trouble."

Lee, a freshman from Longville, pitched four innings and gave up three hits and two runs.  He walked two and struck out three.  He was pulled after throwing 66 pitches, 41 for strikes.  Chris Charpentier, Nick Zaunbrecher and Reagan Bazar combined to throw two shutout innings.

Clement singled home a run in the first inning, singled twice in the fifth with a run scored and an RBI, doubled and scored in the seventh and singled in the eighth.  He also walked in the third inning.

Clement was one of five Cajuns to record multiple hits, as Brenn Conrad had three singles and knocked in two runs, while Joe Robbins, Ishmael Edwards and Nick Thurman also had a pair of hits and an RBI each.

Cody Brown the first of seven pitchers used by SHSU coach Matt Deggs, was saddled with the loss, giving up three runs, two earned in two innings of work.

The Cajuns played errorless ball for the second straight game and committed just one error in the three game series.

The Cajuns will head to Ruston to take on Louisiana Tech Wednesday night at 6pm at J. C. Love Field.
