Louisiana Ragin' Cajun pitcher Carson Baranik had an impressive Cajun debut on Saturday. How impressive?

The junior right-handed transfer allowed just one hit over 7.1 innings to lead the Cajuns to a 1-0 win over Eastern Illinois. He struck out 8, allowed only 3 runners to reach base, and his one hit came with two men out in the fifth.

For his efforts, Baranik was named the Sun Belt Conference pitcher of the week today.

In a prepared statement released by ragincajuns.com, UL head baseball coach Tony Robichaux said the following about Baranik being named SBC pitcher of the week.

"This is a great individual honor that the conference gives out. Carson put in a lot of hard work and effort to get to this point. I think it's well deserved. He went out and threw a great game for us, especially with out a lot of run production.

"He really backed our hitters up. That really epitomizes what we are looking for out of our pitching staff when we take the field. We don't care about runs. We are looking to give our team a chance to win, and I thought he did a great job of that. He's part of a very good pitching staff that we have this year."

Baranik showed off a mean slider, and solid control over 3 different pitches. Despite making his Cajun debut Saturday, he's had plenty of college baseball experience. He spent his freshmen year at LSU, before playing Juco ball at Miami-Dade.

Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun baseball team will return to action this Wednesday for a non-conference road game at Northwestern State. First pitch is set for 6:00. Catch all the action, including 5:30 pre-game, on ESPN1420 and espn1420.com.
