Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun football team announced the hiring of assistant coach Melvin Smith today.

Smith will be defensive backs coach and co-defensive coordinator.

“We’re very excited and fortunate to have Melvin Smith joining our staff,” head coach Mark Hudspeth said in a press release. “He has a reputation of being one of the best defensive back coaches in the country with stops at Auburn, Texas A&M, Mississippi State, Alabama and Ole Miss. He’ll bring a wealth of experience to the defensive side of the ball and he’s known as one of the top recruiters in the country. We’re excited for him and his wife (Shelia) in joining the Ragin’ Cajuns family.”

Smith coached at Mississippi State for 7 seasons, spending time with Hudspeth who was the Bulldogs quarterbacks coach in 2009 and 2010.

After his time in Starkville, Smith spent the last two seasons as a secondary coach at Auburn

With over 32 years in college coaching, Smith spent two decades coaching around the SEC at Auburn, Mississippi State, Alabama, Texas A&M and Ole Miss. He also spent two years at Delta State.
