Boise State's veteran offense looked in midseason form Saturday as the Broncos rolled up 584 yards in total offense and ran away from the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns, 45-10 before an opening day crowd of 22,661 at Cajun Field.

Brett Rypien, last years Mountain West Freshman of the Year, threw for 347 yards and two touchdowns, completing 22-33 passes.  Thomas Sperbeck caught six of those passes for 130 yards and a touchdown and also threw a 48 yard touchdown pass.  Cedric Wilson also had over 100 yards receiving with seven catches for 113 yards and a score.

But it wasn't just the Boise offense that was shining on this bright, sunny day.

The Boise State defense held Louisiana to 267 yards in total offense, much of it coming after the game had been decided.  The Broncos limited Elijah McGuire to just 46 yards on 14 carries as the Cajuns rushed for just 81 yards on 40 attempts.

Senior Anthony Jennings, making his first start for the Cajuns, was effective when he had time to throw, with 186 yards on 21-33 passing.  But Jennings was harassed repeatedly by the Boise State defense, was sacked four times and netted just 18 yards on 16 carries.

The Broncos came out blazing early, scoring five first half touchdowns, with the longest drive taking just 2:11.  That was on the first drive, when BSU took the opening kickoff and traversed 80 yards on just six plays with Jeremy McNichols getting the score from a yard out.  McNichols, who gained over 1,300 yards rushing a year ago, toted the ball nine times for 48 yards.

Rypien then hit Cedrick Wilson with a 42 yard touchdown pass on the next possession to cap a 73 yard, five play drive to make the score 14-0.

The Cajuns, meanwhile, repeatedly put themselves in long yardage situations, either through the failure to protect Jennings, or coming up with inopportune penalties.

Boise State tallied three more touchdowns, with McNichols scoring on a 48 yard pass from Sperbeck, then tallying on a seven yard run, before Sperbeck scored a touchdown on a pass from Rypien to make the score 35-0 with 1:29 to play.

Jennings then led the Cajuns into field goal range, where Stevie Artigue, who has misfired on a 42 yard try earlier, nailed one from 44 yards as the first half clock expired.

Boise State was content to run the football in the third quarter, scoring on a field goal from 30 yards out by Tyler Rausa to make the score 38-3, after which Jennings marched the Cajuns on a 75 yard drive in 14 plays, capped by his 11 yard scoring strike to Keenan Barnes.

Boise State then went back to the air, to get into scoring position, then went back to the ground where reserve running back Alex Mattison scored from two yards out for the final score of the game with 8:44 to play.

The Cajuns wound up with 10 penalties for 71 years, with nine of those miscues coming in the first half.  The Cajuns were just 7-18 on third down.

Louisiana will remain at home next week as they take on McNeese State at Cajun Field.  Kickoff is scheduled for 6pm.
