Apparently Hall-of-Fame quarterback John Elway is not a fan of punk music. How else do you explain the anger John displayed when he learned of a punk band called...Elway. John Elway isn't too happy about a little known punk group using his surname.

Elway's (the HOF) lawyer sent the punk band an e-mail, informing them that John did not want his surname to be used as the band's name.

Elway (the band) responded to the letter with a statement in punknews.org.

"We have no intention of changing the name again. We love the name, regardless of what connotations are inferred by the listener. Surely, if the Dead Kennedys could become one of punk's most popular bands without incurring litigation, Elway can keep their moniker and continue making so-so music for our dozens of fans to enjoy."

Elway gets into it with Elway

I love it. Elway (the band) now has the most publicity it has ever received because Elway (the HOF) is probably still upset by the disastrous Denver Broncos season, and needed to take it out on a couple of punks.

Elway (the band) does not reference Elway (the HOF) in any of their artwork or songs. While Elway is not as common as the name Smith, I would still like to draw up a fair analogy. What if Emmitt Smith was upset at The Smith's (the band), because they have the same group name as Emmitt's surname? I'm not so sure he'd win that battle. One up for Elway (the band). I think I'll go listen to a little punk music.
