The pick: Jerry Fontenot

When deciding who is the best New Orleans Saints player to ever wear #62, the choice is limited to offensive linemen Ross Gwinn, John Hill, Brad Leggett, Jay Hilgenberg, Jeff Uhlenhake, Kendall Gammon, Jerry Fontenot, and Lawrence Virgil.

Our selection is going to be Fontenot, an offensive lineman, who played for the Saints for seven years, from 1997-2003.

After playing his high school football at Lafayette High School, prior to attending college at Texas A&M, Fontenot was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the third round of the 1989 NFL Draft.

A native of Lafayette, La., Fontenot spent eight seasons with the Bears, including the last six as the team's starting center, before signing with the Saints prior to the start of the 1997 season.

With the exception of the 1988 season, when he was injured four games into the year, Fontenot started every game at center for the franchise over the course of seven seasons, before leaving and playing one season for the Cincinnati Bengals, prior to retiring at the end of the 2004 season.

In seven years with the Saints, Fontenot played in 100 games, all as a starter, while compiling 239 career NFL appearances, including 195 as a starter.

Fontenot is currently the tight ends coach for the Green Bay Packers.
