All summer long, we’re going to list the best players in New Orleans Saints history to wear every number, 00-99.

Yesterday, we did #48.

Today, #49:

The pick: Frank Wattelet

When deciding who is the best New Orleans Saints player to ever wear #49, the choice is limited to defensive backs Major Hazelton, Ralph McGill, and Frank Wattelet, receivers Bob Wicks and Artie Owens, and tight end Tommie Stowers.

This is actually a very easy choice, as the guy we're picking is the only player to wear the number for multiple years, while producing at least at an average level.

Our selection is going to be Wattelet, a safety who played seven years for the Saints, from 1981-1987

After playing his college football at Kansas, Wattelet signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent following the 1981 NFL Draft.

A native of Paola, Kansas, Wattelet played mostly on special teams as a rookie, before becoming a full-time starter at safety from 1982-1986.

After leaving the Saints during the 1987 season, Wattelet one-and-a-half season for the Los Angles Rams, before retiring following the 1988 season.

In 91 games with the Saints, Wattelet accumulated 12 interceptions, including one for a touchdown.
