All summer long, we’re going to list the best players in New Orleans Saints history to wear every number, 00-99.

Yesterday, we did #22.

Today, #23:

The pick: Pierre Thomas

When deciding who is the best New Orleans Saints player to ever wear #23, the choice is limited to running backs Buford Jordan, Lorenzo Neal, Ricky Whittle, and Pierre Thomas, defensive backs Doug Wyatt, Craig Cassady, James Marshall, Chris Hewitt, Kevin Mathis, Victor Green, Fred Booker, Omar Stoutmire, and return man Charlie Thomas.

This one is kind of a no-brainer, as we're going to go with Thomas, a running back, who played with the Saints for 8 seasons, from 2007-2014.

After finishing his college career at Illinois, where he finished sixth on the all-time rushing list, Thomas was signed by the Saints as an undrafted free agent following the 2007 NFL Draft.

After beating out former fourth-round draft pick to make the team, Thomas went on to rush for 252 yards and one touchdowns in his rookie campaign, while catching 17 passes for another 151 yards and a score.

Including 2009, when he rushed for a career-high 793 yards, and 2013, when he caught a career-best 77 passes, Thomas went on to rush for 3,745 yards and 28 touchdowns in his 8 seasons with the team, while compiling 327 receptions for 2,608 yards and 12 scores.

A native of Chicago, Illinois, Thomas ranks fourth on the Saints all-time rushing list, and also has the six-most catches in franchise history.

The 5-foot-11, 210-pound Thomas was released by the Saints in March of 2015, making him an unrestricted free agent.
