The pick: Thomas Morstead

When picking the best Saints player ever to wear #6, the choice is limited to punters Tommy Barnhardt, Dirk Johnson, and Thomas Morstead.

All due respect to Barnhardt, who was a quality punter for the franchise for a number of years, Morstead is kind of a no-brainer as the pick here.

After finishing his collegiate career at SMU, Morstead was taken by the Saints in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL Draft.

Morstead proved to be a great acquisition for the Saints, punting for an average of at least 43.6 yards in each of his first six seasons, and over 45.0 yards-per-punt in five of the six.

An All-Pro in 2012, Morstead averaged 50.1 yards-per-punt that season.

A native of Houston, Texas, Morstead played a critical role in the Saints' victory over the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV, executing an onside kick during the second half kickoff.

The Saints recovered the ball and were able to convert that possession into a touchdown and a 13-10 lead, and eventually would go on to win the game, 31-17.

Also used on kickoffs, Morstead has averaged 47.0 yards-per-punt over his first six seasons in the NFL.
