A number of people have represented the Acadiana area in the National Football League.

All summer long, we’re going to spotlight the fantastic athletes from the area, people that were actually born in one of the Acadiana parishes, that went on to play football at the highest level, the NFL.

Yesterday, we profiled Lafayette native Lyman White.

Today, we spotlight Herb Williams.

Born on August 30, 1958 in Lafayette, Williams attended McKinley High School in Baton Rouge.

Following his high school years, Williams went to college at Southern University, where he was a standout defensive back for the Jaguars.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Williams was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the 6th round of the 1980 NFL Draft.

Williams made his NFL debut with the 49ers in 1980, at the age of 22, appearing in 9 games, mostly on special teams.

The following season, 1982, Williams would move on to the St. Louis Cardinals, where he appeared in 10 games over two years as a reserve defensive back and special teams performer.

In 3 seasons in the NFL, Williams appeared in 19 games, including two as a starter.

Today, Williams is 58-years old.
