Alex Bregman, of the LSU Tigers, was named the 2013 National Freshman Player of the Year, by Collegiate Baseball magazine on Wednesday.

The Albuquerque, New Mexico native become the fifth LSU to win the award, joining second baseman Todd Walker (1992), pitcher Brett Laxton (1993), second baseman Mike Fontenot (2000) and pitcher Lane Mestepey (2001).

Bregman, who also won the 2013 SEC Freshman of the Year, is hitting a .385, with 17 doubles, seven triples, six home runs, and 52 RBI's, along with 15 stolen bases, heading into LSU's Super Regional series against the Oklahoma Sooners this weekend.

The freshman has helped lead the Tigers to an overall record of 55-9, heading into the series this weekend, which will begin on Friday evening, at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field, in Baton Rouge, La.
