The LHSAA High School Basketball Playoffs begin on Friday night! The Acadiana area will be represented very well. Let's look through each of the brackets at which area teams made the postseason.

Class 5A

Three teams representing District 3-5A make up the Acadiana area teams in this bracket. The highest ranked Acadiana area team, Lafayette High, steamrolled through district play and looks to keep the momentum going. A potential quarterfinal matchup with #3 Scotlandville may decide if the Mighty Lions can make it back to the Top 28 Tournament.

Comeaux and Carencro are two perennial playoff schools who each have tall tasks in the first round: knocking off one of the New Orleans area Catholic powerhouses.

6 Lafayette
27 Captain Shreve

9 Brother Martin
24 Comeaux

4 St. Augustine
29 Carencro

Class 4A

This class features the most Acadiana area teams - 7. The highest ranked Acadiana area team is the team who won the ultra competitive District 5-4A - the St. Martinville Tigers. Provided they take care of business against Huntington, a second round matchup against district rival Northside could be in the making - if the Vikings pull off a big upset against perennial state championship contender Ellender.

St. Thomas More, Teurlings and Cecilia also represent District 5-4A. The Cougars and the Rebels sit on opposite sides of the bracket with huge potential second round matchups awaiting each team - Plaquemine for STM and Edna Karr for the Teurlings. Cecilia, who was quite the pesky opponent at times for their fellow district mates, must pull off a road upset over Leesville if they want to make the second round.

Opelousas and Beau Chene will also have to pull off road upsets if they want to make it past the first round - against Fair Park and Tioga - respectively.

Class 3A

All Acadiana area teams in this class will have to open on the road in the first round. On paper, Ville Platte has the best chance of pulling off the upset as they get ready to matchup with Madison. But, don't count out Abbeville. Coach Berwick Hamilton has a state championship to his name and his playoff experience should not be discounted, even though his Wildcats must travel to B.T. Washington.

Jennings and North Vermilion round out the list of four Acadiana area teams to make the postseason.

13 Washington, B.T.
20 Abbeville

7 Patterson
26 Jennings

4 Westlake
29 North Vermilion

Class 2A

Only two teams represent the Acadiana area in this class, yet both of them have very legitimate chances of moving on past the first round. Catholic-N.I. hosts St. James with a chance to pull an upset against North Caddo in the second round, while Jeanerette just missed out on hosting as well with a 17 seed and will have to travel to Isidore Newman.

21 St. James

16 Newman, Isidore
17 Jeanerette

Class 1A

District 7-1A is very well represented in this bracket, making up five of the six playoffs teams from the Acadiana area. Lafayette Christian Academy is certainly a favorite to get back to the Top 28 after making it to the tournament last season for the first time (CLICK HERE for more on that), in only their second season of LHSAA play. After a first round matchup with St. Frederick, a potential STM Sunkist Shootout rematch with Grambling (a game won by LCA) awaits in the second round, as well as a rematch with White Castle, who the Knights beat in last year's quarterfinals. (White Castle must play North Central in the first round.) If seeding holds true, LCA would match up with Arcadia in the semifinals and Madison Prep in the State Championship Game, the same team who knocked LCA out of the Top 28 last season.

Central Catholic, Ascension Episcopal, Hanson Memorial and Vermilion Catholic round out the District 7-1A representatives. CCMC will take on Christian Life, who is certainly no stranger to playoff success. Ascension Episcopal hosts Elton in hopes of getting back to the second round, with a potential road match up with Northwood-Lena looming, who will play Vermilion Catholic at home. An AES-Northwood matchup would feature two strong big men, one for each team. Hanson Memorial will have to go on the road and defeat perennial playoff contender Plain Dealing in the first round.

Class B

Midland highlights the list of Acadiana area teams to make this playoff bracket. The perennial postseason contenders are often a threat to make the Top 28, and this year is certainly no exception as they have been rolling through the competition.

Centerville and Episcopal of Acadiana must each travel on the road and win to make it out of the first round. ESA's task seems to be much more daunting as they will have to knock off another Top 28 threat in Zwolle. Centerville will travel to Grace Christian.
